Mastering the Kleine Chicane at Zolder can either make or break your lap, taking the chicane incorrectly can cost you crucial lap time! Let’s break down the key differences between novice and pro drivers to help you improve your lap times. For a visual demonstration, watch the video here.
KEY TECHNIQUES
Braking Point and Turn-In Phase: The novice driver brakes just before the pole on the right and turns in slightly earlier, which compromises the first part of the chicane due to later braking and a narrower entry. In contrast, the pro driver brakes slightly earlier and starts the turn-in phase later. By doing this, a straighter trajectory over the curb for a smoother exit is achieved. This method allows for an easier transition over the first part of Kleine Chicane enhancing the car’s performance and predictability through the chicane.

Handling the Curbs: The novice takes the first curb shallow due to an earlier turn-in. Due to their earlier turn-in, they need to stay on the brakes longer. Unfortunately, this makes the car less tolerant of the curb. This results in more bouncing and forces the driver to hit the second curb, leading to excessive bouncing and a compromised exit. The pro driver straight-lines the first curb and uses almost 100% throttle to lift the car’s nose, providing more clearance. By avoiding the second curb, the pro achieves a smoother and faster exit.

Throttle Management: Pro drivers utilise optimal throttle management to lift the car’s nose over the first curb. This provides more clearance and stability. This technique allows for a more controlled and efficient passage through the chicane, improving lap times significantly.
